CCSD#1 will prepare and empower all students for successful, lifelong learning through effective teaching.

On Thursday, August 29th, Sundance Secondary students will have a 60 minute presentation from the presenters of  Rachel’s Challenge. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will attend another 90 minute presentation later on in the day. Rachel Scott’s challenge was to reach out to others with deliberate acts of kindness. The presentation is a fun, energetic, interactive assembly that mixes music, video and activities to tell her story. Students will learn about a young girl named Rachel; however they will not hear or see footage related to the Columbine tragedy or her death. The outcomes of the Secondary presentation are for students to understand that treating others with respect is fun and should not just be about what they do, but who they are; for students to understand issues of bullying and destructive behaviors; and for students to be excited about treating others with respect and starting their own “chains of kindness”.

CCSD #1 is working with Rachel’s Challenge to stimulate academic achievement and social-emotional learning by focusing on the connection between students, faculty and staff. Using the remarkable story of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School tragedy, Rachel’s Challenge awakens the individual hope, desire and purpose; which in turn promotes safer, more connected school communities.

A Rachel’s Challenge staff member will share Rachel’s story with the Sundance community on Thursday, August 29th at 7:00 PM in the SHS Kahler Auditorium. Rachel’s Challenge does not recommend children under 6th grade attending the evening presentation. There will be a daycare service provided at SHS for any parents that need one.

Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying and negativity with acts of respect, kindness and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine School shooting in 1999. Through her example , Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people every year.

           Rachel's Challenge Community Event

Superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and students bring Rachel’s Challenge into their schools to combat problems such as bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence and disciplinary actions. Through powerful presentations and trainings, community events, and professional development, Rachel’s Challenge provides the sustainable solution.

Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. Rachel’s Challenge renews our hope that our life has meaning and purpose. Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassion, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities.
